Letters rogatory are a formal request a court makes to a foreign counterpart for some type of legal aid. One of the main reasons is to obtain information and evidence, or even to carry out a certain legal procedure where a court has no jurisdiction.

Using letters rogatory is possible thanks to the Hague Convention and the Inter-American Convention, a kind of agreement that facilitates the recognition and processing of documents among participating countries. Brazil is a signatory to both conventions.

Letters rogatory are used in cooperation and provided that the agreements respect public order (rules of law) and the sovereignty of the country receiving the letter.
